13 января отмечается День российской печати. Именно в этот день в 1703 году в Москве вышла первая русская газета «Ведомости о военных и иных делах, достойных знания и памяти, случившихся в Московском государстве и во иных окрестных странах».
Газета была создана по указу Петра I «О печатании газет для извещения оными о заграничных и внутренних происшествиях». Тираж первого номера издания составил 1 тысячу экземпляров и состоял из 4 небольших страничек по 27 строк каждая. «Выпускающим редактором» первого номера газеты был сам Петр I.
Чтобы газета стала популярной, Петр I издал указ «На западный манер в Москве учредить аустер-ресторации», где чаем и кренделями угощали даром, но лишь тех, кто читал приносимые сюда с собой «Ведомости».
В 1711 году газета стала издаваться и в Санкт-Петербурге. Из Москвы были доставлены два типографских станка, мастеровые люди – четыре наборщика и два изготовителя красок. Типография находилась в доме цейх-директора Оружейной канцелярии Михаила Аврамова, он же был редактором «Ведомостей».
Летом 1719 года Михаил Аврамов обратился в правительство с реляцией, в которой доказывал, что «одних выписок из иностранных газет и донесений наших должностных лиц далеко не достаточно для интереса и жизненности нашего органа», поэтому он просит позволения писать и о публичных делах. Петр I, ознакомившись с этой реляцией, приказал определить для собирания сведений о жизни русского общества переводчика Якова Синявича. Таким образом, Синявич стал первым русским репортером. После этого газета заметно оживилась: она стала освещать большой круг проблем, печатать самую разнообразную информацию.
С 1728 года выходом газеты стала заниматься Академия наук. Изменилось и название газеты – она стала называться «Санкт-Петербургские ведомости». Газета выходила различными тиражами, иногда он доходил до 4000 экземпляров. Постепенно тираж становился все меньше, пока не упал до 30 экземпляров. Стоимость газеты была довольно высокой, поэтому читать ее могли только привилегированные персоны. Дольше всех в Москве просуществовала газета «Московские ведомости» – 161 год. Печаталась она в типографии Московского университета и выходила два раза в неделю. Первой провинциальной газетой в России стали «Восточные ведомости», издававшиеся в Астрахани с 1813 по 1816 год.
С 1 января 1870 года «высочайшим повелением» было соизволено «устроить в виде опыта» «прием в почтовых учреждениях подписки на периодические издания — как русские, так и иностранные». Это было первое в России распоряжение о проведении подписки на периодическую печать. Уже к 1914 году в России выходило свыше трех тысяч периодических изданий.
Ежедневных больших общественно-политических газет, не считая губернских официальных «Ведомостей», в дореволюционной России существовало более 200. Тираж газет и журналов был достаточно велик. Московские и санкт-петербургские «Ведомости» с некоторыми перерывами печатались до 1917 года, затем были закрыты как буржуазные издания.
После 1917 года праздник российской печати был перенесен на 5 мая — день, когда вышла главная советская газета «Правда», и переименован в «День советской печати»
Постановлением Президиума Верховного Совета РФ от 28 декабря 1991 года празднование «Дня российской печати» было вновь возвращено к исторически верной дате – 13 января.
В конце 2008 года в Российской Федерации было зарегистрировано 35,5 тысяч газет и еженедельников, но постоянно присутствует на рынке не более 13 ‑ 14 тысяч из них. При этом объемы газет, их оборот и рекламные доходы до последнего времени росли. Быстро развивались и получали все большую популярность Интернет-издания.
Аналогичные тенденции наблюдались и в других странах мира.
